Shadow Play: Joe Cino, a saint in a sweatshirt, among some of his miracles
2016
oil on canvas
45 x 62 inches

Joe Cino created OFF-Off Broadway and mid-wifed Gay theater at his Greenwich Village coffeehouse "Caffe Cino". Joe Cino, appears twice here in separate events. Various habitués are simultaneously seen inside and outside the cafe, among scenes from performances that on one level celebrate the euphoric delight in camp farce, like Tom Eyen's "Why Hannah's Skirt Won't Stay Down" or Sanford Wilson's "The Madness of Lady Bright"—both embody allusions to Cino's inner demons.
